On November 12 of this year, a meeting of the Transport Science Working Group of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan under the President of Kazakhstan was held, chaired by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan Teltayev Bagdat Burganbayuly. Arystan Zholanovich Massanov, Director of KazSRIRS LLP, gave a presentation on road safety. The main aspects of road safety in Kazakhstan were presented. According to the data presented, between 1991 and 2024, more than 512,000 traffic accidents were recorded in our country, killing more than 95,000 people and injuring 622,000. In 2024 alone, 2,053 people were killed and 29,916 were injured in Kazakhstan, which is a terrible human tragedy. It has also led to enormous economic losses amounting to 5.91 trillion tenge (in nominal GDP), which is 4% of GDP.
The report also presents scientific areas in the field of road safety that require solutions.
The importance of institutionalizing the road safety sector and creating a separate authorized body to coordinate all road safety activities was emphasized. According to the participants, this will allow for more effective solutions to current problems and improve the overall situation on the country’s roads. Among the key issues raised at the meeting were the high level of mortality and injuries on Kazakhstan’s roads, as well as the low level of awareness and responsibility among road users. The participants in the discussion pointed out the main causes of road accidents, which highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to improving safety. The working group’s experts identified the responsibility of state bodies involved in road safety as a priority over the responsibility of road users, in accordance with Article 3 of the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On Road Traffic.” The measures and initiatives discussed are designed to create safer conditions for all road users.
