We survey road infrastructure, identify risks and prepare recommendations for improving safety using the iRAP methodology.
Each bar is a 100 m section of road. The colour shows the level of built-in safety.
The Institute assesses roads using the iRAP methodology. The rating is calculated separately for vehicle occupants, motorcyclists, pedestrians and bicyclists.
About the KazRAP programmeA road with basic protective features, but with sections where a driver's or pedestrian's error leads to severe outcomes.
The diagram illustrates selected road infrastructure attributes. The rating of a specific section is determined by calculation based on the input data and the road user category.
We work under contracts and to the client's terms of reference: from assessing a single section to surveying road networks and training specialists.
Road section, 100-metre segments
We define the network length, the road user categories and the output format: a report, a rating, an investment plan or all of these.
Driving the route while recording road conditions, georeferencing the data and collecting traffic volume data.
Trained specialists code more than 50 road attributes: median separation, shoulders, roadside, crossings, lighting and safety barriers.
The data are processed in the iRAP software. The output is a Star Rating for each segment and an estimate of the number of fatalities and serious injuries.
We draw up a list of countermeasures with an economic justification, hand the report over to the client and support implementation.
Star Ratings of sections of Kazakhstan's road network based on the assessment results: from one star where the risk is high to five stars.
The client receives the results for each section and the countermeasure plan in the report and in ViDA.
Road assessment, specialist training and the Institute's own KazRAP programme: work with government bodies and international partners.
