An on-site examination of an existing road: we identify sections and features that increase crash risk and severity and propose measures to eliminate them.
The road is already in service and you need to know what is dangerous on it now: worn markings, obstructed visibility, poles and trees near the edge, crossings that are inconvenient for pedestrians.
An inspection is a scheduled check of the facilities and maintenance of a road in service. An audit checks the design, an inspection - what has already been built and is in operation.
We agree the sections, the season and time of the inspection and the content of the report.
We study crash records for the section and residents' complaints, if any: this shows where to look first.
Drive-through and walk-through inspection with photo and video records and coordinates, by day and at night if needed.
We rate each deficiency by risk: what is dangerous now and what can be included in scheduled works.
A list of measures divided into urgent, routine and capital.
Kazakhstan: strategic risk assessment on the strategic road network
Under the project, specialists from road organisations were trained to implement the iRAP methodology in five modules, from on-site road inspection to analysis of results. The Institute held a separate seminar for heads of government agencies.

Shymkent: strategic road safety meeting with iRAP experts
The meeting was held as part of the development of the Road Safety Strategy of the Republic of Kazakhstan. At a round table with the local authorities, police and transport services, participants identified priority steps to reduce crashes on the city's roads.
