The KazSRIRS LLP programme for assessing the safety of Kazakhstan's roads using the international iRAP methodology.
KazRAP is the programme of the Kazakh Scientific Research Institute for Road Safety for assessing the safety of Kazakhstan's roads. The programme belongs to the Institute: it is neither a state body nor a state programme.
The assessment is carried out by the Institute's specialists using the iRAP methodology - International Road Assessment Programme. A road is assessed not by the crashes that have already happened but by its design: how well the layout of a section protects people when a mistake does occur. The survey, coding and calculation rules are the same as in other countries, so the results are comparable internationally.
In 2025 the Institute registered its own software product, KazRAP S, for comprehensive study of road condition and traffic safety, and signed a memorandum with KazAvtoZhol National Company JSC on implementing the programme on national roads.
Every section is described in the same way, so the rating of one road can be compared with any other.
The road is divided into 100-metre sections, and each is assessed separately.
Median separation, lanes, shoulders, roadside, intersections, crossings, lighting, safety barriers, traffic speed.
The rating is calculated separately for vehicle occupants, motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians.
Estimating the number of fatalities and serious injuries on a section before and after countermeasures.
Countermeasures for each section with costs, effect and priority.
From one star at high risk to five stars, where protection of road users is built into the road itself. The scale colours are part of the iRAP methodology.
Star Rating of national network sections based on the results of the iRAP assessment.
Describe the section or road network and the result you need.
We agree the input data, road user groups and scope of deliverables.
We set out the scope, timeline and procedure for handing over the results.
