The Kazakh Scientific Research Institute for Road Safety, together with the Almaty City Police Department, the Almaty Urban Mobility Department, the Kazakh Automobile and Road Institute and KazdorNII JSC, is holding a campaign dedicated to the UN Global Road Safety Week on 16-22 May 2022.
This special week is held to raise awareness of road safety and highlights the changes needed to reduce the number of road crashes and deaths. At the initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO), the UN Global Road Safety Week (UNGRSW) is held to highlight the benefits of low speed limits on urban streets.
The week is intended to raise awareness of road safety and highlights the changes needed to reduce the number of road crashes and deaths.
- to draw attention to securing political commitments at national and local level to introduce 30 km/h speed limits in all urban areas.
- to build local support for such low-speed measures so that people can live in safe, healthy, green cities.
- to formally present the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 and its Global Plan to the whole world.
Groups and organisations observing the week believe that lower vehicle speeds can save lives. They also state that the speed limit is 30 km/h (20 mph) where people and traffic together make up "streets for life".
The campaign participants fully support this UN position and are working to apply safety best practice in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
