The high death rate on Kazakhstan's roads remains a major problem. As the country's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev noted: "The death rate on the roads remains high. The likelihood of dying in a road crash in Kazakhstan is 11 times higher than in European countries. We have discussed this problem both in Parliament and in the Government. However, it remains unresolved and pressing. The number of people killed is comparable to the losses in major armed conflicts and even wars."
To reduce road deaths, the state has developed the "East - West" road development project. It includes the introduction of the European Road Assessment Programme in the Republic of Kazakhstan, with the Committee for Roads of the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan as the client. The work will be carried out by the Swedish company SweRoad and the Kazakh Scientific Research Institute for Road Safety (KazSRIRS) from January 2020 to June 2021.
